More than 20,000 people are diagnosed with esophageal cancer every year and only 20% will live 5 years after being diagnosed which makes it the second most deadly cancer in the US. The incidence of esophageal cancer has increased in the US over 500% during the last four decades.  People who are men, over 80, white, obese, smokers or have a family history at risk for getting esophageal cancer.  If it can be diagnosed at the pre-cancer stages it can be treated or even in the early stages.  If someone has had chronic heartburn over years should be screened.
