The Broncos beat the defending Super Bowl champions on Thursday night, and the Thursday Night Football crew still spent much of the postgame show deflating Bo Nix.
Denver beat the Seattle Seahawks 17-14 in overtime at Empower Field at Mile High. Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted Sam Darnold on Seattle’s first possession of overtime, and Wil Lutz kicked a 53-yard field goal to win it. The win puts the Broncos at 4-2 after a brutal six-game start. They are now 4-0 in one-score games and 3-0 at home.
For once, Denver didn’t need a comeback. The Broncos led 14-3 at halftime after an eight-minute scoring drive spanning the first and second quarter that included several third-down conversions and a fourth-and-3 near midfield. The offense then stalled in the second half. Denver gained 30 yards, picked up two first downs and went 0-for-6 on third down. Nix was 7-of-12 for 29 yards after halftime. Seattle rallied to tie it at 14 with three seconds left before McMillian’s interception ultimately ended it in overtime.
Nix finished 17-of-27 for 107 yards with no touchdowns. That’s the second-lowest passing total of his career, ahead of only his 60-yard game against the Jets in his fourth NFL start. He also has four game-winning drives this season to make it 14 in his career.
That didn’t matter to Ryan Fitzpatrick. The former quarterback, who played 17 seasons in the NFL, went after Nix on the Prime Video postgame show.

“Bo Nix is not playing competitively,” Fitzpatrick said. “It’s almost disrespectful to the quarterback position how he’s playing football right now.”
When he was asked to explain, Fitzpatrick pointed to the ending of the game.
“First of all, the guy doesn’t want to throw the ball. That’s fine, he’s throwing to the flats, he’s throwing behind. But he has no trust from his coach. He calls a screen play on third and eight, just run up, let the clock keep going. What does he do? He throws it away.”
“And then in overtime, he’s got two chances to be competitive. The last one being a designed run for him to run. Make somebody miss and get a first down for your football team.”
He kept going.
“Now, they’re in the locker room right now. They’re excited, they won. He’s not playing competitive football right now!”
“I can only imagine how Sean Payton feels. I mean, Sean Payton, Davis Webb, everybody that blocks for him, he’s not competing right now and that’s something that he’s hung his hat on for the last two years. I don’t know if he’s still injured and I don’t know what’s going on, but it’s not good enough.”
Later in the show, Fitzpatrick doubled down: “That effort is garbage. That is not a quarterback in the NFL. (We) deserve better.”
Fitzpatrick had 18 game-winning drives across his 17-year career. Nix, again, has 14 in three seasons.
Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez, who holds the career records for receptions and receiving yards at his position, joined in.
“Offensively right now, it is anemic. If I’m a Denver Bronco fan I’m looking at this going, ‘Hey Bo Nix, if this keeps up, maybe even a good benching,'” Gonzalez said. “Offensively, you cannot be happy with this.”
The critics have a point about the offense. The Broncos went three-and-out six times. Late in regulation, Kris Abrams-Draine intercepted Darnold with 1:25 left, but Denver ran only 15 seconds off the clock before punting. Seattle used that possession to tie the game. In overtime, Denver gained just eight yards before Lutz’s kick.
Still, the result counts. Denver played without its two best defensive backs, Pat Surtain II and Talanoa Hufanga, and Vance Joseph’s defense picked off Darnold twice in the final minutes. The Broncos have now come through a stretch against the Chiefs, Jaguars, Rams, 49ers, Chargers and Seahawks two games over .500.
Bo Nix’s numbers haven’t been great, and Payton knows the offense has to improve. But Nix has kept getting the Broncos into position to win, and they keep winning. Most of Broncos Country will take that.
Denver now gets a mini-bye before visiting the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, October 25.
