Deion Sanders benches QB Julian Lewis, CU Buffs still lose at Baylor

Deion Sanders made a QB change on Saturday afternoon against Baylor.

We’ll have to see if it’s a permanent one.

At halftime, with the CU Buffs down 10-3 to the Bears, Deion Sanders benched Julian Lewis and inserted Isaac Wilson. Lewis had 11 completions in the first half but only threw for 75 yards.

Coming out of the locker room it was Wilson as the new starting quarterback. He’s the younger brother of former Broncos QB Zach Wilson.

And the change initially looked like it might work with Wilson tossing a touchdown to Joseph Williams to tie the game 13-13 in the fourth quarter.

But the Buffs defense couldn’t get a key stop, letting Baylor almost immediately regain a 20-13 lead. The Bears would prevail by a final of 23-13, dropping Colorado to 2-2 on the season.

But the headline from this one is the benching of Lewis. The former highly-touted recruit has never found his footing with the Buffs, and Deion Sanders even said earlier this week he wasn’t cut out to be a leader yet.

That had to hurt his already frail confidence after the CU offense needed a late rally against Georgia Tech to win the opener and then was poor at Northwestern in Week 3, managing only seven points.

There was some chatter over the summer Lewis was looking to transfer and now that talk might grow louder. Especially if Sanders commits to Wilson at quarterback moving forward. Wilson finished 12/25 for 156 yards and a TD.

What once looked like an exciting season with a 2-0 start now feels like it was months in the past.

And as usual with Deion Sanders, there’s fresh drama around the program. This time involving his QBs, which will surely be the discussion over the next seven days before the Buffs host a dangerous Texas Tech team.
