One team looms largest between the Broncos and a Super Bowl

The Denver Broncos have spent three years building toward this moment. Bo Nix is healthy and entering his prime. Davis Webb is ready to unleash an offense designed around the best weapons Nix has ever had. The receiver room and running back room both went through meaningful upgrades over the offseason. And the defense, already one of the best in the NFL, only got better. Every ingredient for a championship season is sitting on the counter. The recipe is written. The kitchen is ready.

But on a recent edition of “Dover and Cecil” on 104.3 The Fan, Josh Dover identified the one variable that could spoil everything, and it’s the team the Broncos will see first.

“I think the one big thing that stands in the way of the Denver Broncos, is the dragon that they’ll slay on Monday night. I think it’s the Chiefs,” Dover said.

Kansas City finished last season with a 6-11 record, the worst of the Patrick Mahomes era. Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL that ended his season prematurely. Travis Kelce is entering what many believe could be his final campaign. The dynasty, by every surface-level metric, appears to be crumbling. But Dover isn’t ready to write the obituary.

“I do think it’s the Kansas City Chiefs that bounce back. And six wins a year ago, I’m not saying that their 14-win season is on deck,” Dover said.

The storyline surrounding Kansas City reads like a Hollywood script. A legendary quarterback returning from a devastating knee injury. A future Hall of Fame tight end potentially playing his final season. A franchise desperate to prove that last year’s collapse was the anomaly, not the new normal. The NFL thrives on these narratives, and the Chiefs have all the ingredients for a Cinderella run that nobody outside of Kansas City wants to see.

Dover then explained why Kansas City, specifically, concerns him more than the other contenders in the conference.

“I’m not afraid of the Buffalo Bills. I think that window, we’ll see if Joe Brady’s gonna force it to stay open for a couple more years, but I don’t know man. I’m just not sold on the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen. But what I’m very hesitant to do, is just slam the window of Patrick Mahomes,” Dover said.

That’s the distinction that separates Kansas City from every other threat in the AFC. Buffalo can be dismissed. Other contenders can be schemed around. But Mahomes, even a Mahomes coming off a major knee reconstruction, commands a level of respect that no injury or losing season can erase. His track record is too long, his talent too proven, and his competitive fire too well-documented to simply assume the decline is permanent.

The Broncos have the roster to win a Super Bowl. Dover believes that. But the path to that trophy runs directly through Kansas City, starting Monday night. If Denver can slay the dragon at Arrowhead under the brightest lights of Week 1, the rest of the conference will take notice. If they can’t, the fairytale that Kansas City is trying to write gets its opening chapter.

One thing is certain, the Broncos won’t be able to avoid the Chiefs on their way to a championship. The only question is whether they are ready to be the team that ends the story before it starts.
