Rockies lose 90th of the season as Bronx Bombers live up to their name

Rockies Report, Game 145:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: With the Rockies offense stuck in neutral for much of Tuesday evening’s game at Yankee Stadium, all it took was two big swings to send Colorado to its 90th loss of the season and its fourth defeat in the last five games.

Luis García Jr. started the onslaught with a solo homer off Tomoyuki Sugano in the second inning, and then George Lombard Jr. delivered a grand slam that put the Rockies in a 5-0 hole en route to a 6-1 loss.

Lombard was the fourth-consecutive New York batter to reach base with two outs in the third inning, a stretch which ended up dooming the Rox to defeat, sealing a series loss.

Sugano retired the next 10 Yankees he faced before his evening concluded, but Colorado couldn’t capitalize on its chances, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

The Rockies fell to 55-90; they must go 8-9 the rest of the way to avoid the club’s fourth-consecutive 100-loss season. That would make them just the fifth team in MLB history to post at least four-straight seasons with triple-digit defeats, and their tally would be exceeded only by the 1938-42 Philadelphia Phillies.

No team has posted four-consecutive 100-loss campaigns since the 1962-65 New York Mets and the 1961-64 Washington Senators; both were expansion teams in their first four seasons of existence when they endured those runs of futility.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Sugano was at least able to save the bullpen and give the Rockies six full innings, but his recent downturn continued. Over his last five starts, his ERA has increased from 4.43 to 5.30, with just one quality start — last Wednesday against Baltimore — in that span.

The loss to the Yankees also saw him allow two home runs for the ninth time this season.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Cole Carrigg grounded into an inning-ending double play with two on in the fifth inning; the Rockies’ only run of the night had come earlier in the frame when Connor Norby delivered a solo home run.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 9.38 — Sugano’s ERA over his last five starts.

WHAT’S NEXT: It’s a tough assignment for Ryan Feltner on Thursday night, as the Yankees will counter with veteran left-hander Max Fried. First pitch of the series finale from Yankee Stadium is set for 5:05 p.m. MDT.
