Rockies complete rally with Sullivan’s 2-RBI walk-off single, take series from Orioles

Rockies Report, Game 140:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Down to the team’s last strike, Brett Sullivan dropped a two-out RBI single into shallow left field in the bottom of the 11th inning, scoring TJ Rumfield and Adael Amador to to give the Rockies a 6-5 win over the Orioles at Coors Field.

The 11th-inning rally after Baltimore plated two runners began when TJ Rumfield drew the Rox back within a run to open their half of the 11th inning with a leadoff RBI single, scoring Connor Norby from second base. He remained at first base two outs later, when Adael Amador hit a drive to the warning track that would have scored Rumfield … except that it bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double, forcing Rumfield to stop at third base.

But Sullivan came through, giving the Rockies a series win over the Orioles after dropping the series opener Monday night.

The Rockies nearly pulled off the walk-off trick in the ninth after trailing 3-2. Two near home runs in the ninth inning were just that — near, but not enough. First, Hunter Goodman launched a potential game-tying home run in the ninth inning, but it was judged to be a foul ball on the field and then was upheld after a crew-chief-called replay review. The ball landed outside of the foul pole on the concourse.

Two pitches later, Goodman struck out. But with two outs, Cole Carrigg crushed an Andrew Kittredge sinker off the top of the left-field wall for a double. Four pitches later, Zac Veen doubled to right field, tying the game.

The Rockies have had significant issues with runners in scoring position recently, but they went 4-for-11 Wednesday and are 6-for-22 the last two days after going 5-for-44 in their previous five contests, all losses.

Colorado improved to 54-86.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Tomoyuki Sugano kept the ball in the yard and allowed six hits and a walk over six full innings of work. Only a third inning in which he allowed four hits — including a 2-RBI double to Luis Robert Jr. — sullied a day, but it didn’t prevent him from his first quality start since Aug. 11.

Sugano needed to go deep after not making it through the fifth inning in his previous two trips to the mound, and he got it.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Sullivan capitalized off an elevated Grant Wolfram sinker, slicing it into left field for the game-winning hit.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 1.333 — Amador’s OPS over 22 plate appearances in two call-ups during the last month.

WHAT’S NEXT: A treasured day off at home before starting a three-game Labor Day weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Ryan Feltner draws the assignment for the 6:40 p.m. MDT series opener Friday night; the Cardinals’ starter is to be announced.
