Rockies ride four homers — including a grand slam — to 13-1 romp over Nationals

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Connor Norby’s seventh-inning grand slam continued his recent torrid streak and powered the Rockies to a 13-1 rout of the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night.

Leading 4-1, Norby stepped into the batter’s box with two outs in the seventh and launched Luis Perales’ 2-1 cutter into the left-center-field seats, breaking the game wide open.

Norby now has a .310/.408/.571 since joining the Rockies in the Victor Vodnik trade just before the MLB trade deadline.

“He takes solid at-bats every time out,” Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said. “He doesn’t swing at balls. He gets the pitcher in the zone, and then usually good things happen with that.”

The Rox would add five runs in the eighth inning, with position player Jorbit Vivas called on to mop up the inning after matters got out of hand.

Colorado catcher Hunter Goodman added his second home run in as many nights — a two-run shot in the afore-mentioned eighth — since returning from the injured list Tuesday; his season-long tally now sits at 36.. Troy Johnston and Cole Carrigg each had two-run homers in the fifth inning as the Rox moved in front to stay.

Colorado batters combined for 15 hits and eight walks on the night. Seven of the nine Rockies in the lineup had exactly two hits apiece.

The Rockies improved to 52-81.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Tanner Gordon got plenty of run support, but he was proficient on his own, going seven innings and allowing six hits without a walk over the length of his 90-pitch evening. The only run at his expense came when Andrés Chaparro won a nine-pitch battle for the solo homer that represented the sum total of Washington’s offensive output Wednesday night.

“‘T.G.’ was off the charts tonight. Getting ahead with his heater, putting it where he wanted all night,” Schaeffer said. “Change-up was good; the slider had depth tonight. The off-speed was good tonight But it all starts with him getting ahead (in counts). And at 0-1 he was 14 out of 15 strikes, which is elite.”

Gordon worked seven full innings for the first time in his major-league career, which covers 30 starts over the last three seasons. He got credit for his first win of the season.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Norby hit his grand slam to push Colorado’s lead to 8-1 in the seventh inning.
