Sean Payton says Broncos QB Bo Nix ‘probably won’t play’ against Vikings

Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix had a brief preseason.

It sounds like head coach Sean Payton has seen enough.

After practice wrapped on Wednesday, Payton was asked if Bo Nix will take the field on Friday night against the Minnesota Vikings in Denver’s preseason finale.

“We’ll see. Do I talk to you guys tomorrow?” Payton wondered.

Once reporters clarified that Payton doesn’t meet with media on Thursday, he was in a little bit more of a sharing mood.

“Alright, he probably won’t play in this game. Alright. Let’s not go through everyone else,” Payton said with a smile.

That all but confirms Nix is done in the preseason after two solid drives against the Packers last week. Nix finished 6/9 for 76 yards and a touchdown. He led scoring marches in both series, a TD pass to RJ Harvey followed by setting things up for a Wil Lutz field goal.

Bo Nix also hooked up with new receiver Jaylen Waddle for a 35-yard completion on the touchdown drive.

It was a huge milestone for Nix, his first NFL action since breaking his ankle in the playoffs last year and having two offseason surgeries. Nix said it was “like riding a bike” after his successful outing.

And with the regular season opener looming on Sept. 14 against the Chiefs, it makes sense why Payton would hold out Nix. He’s got nothing left to prove and the ankle looks healthy.

We’ll see what other starters join Bo Nix on the sidelines against the Vikings, but it could be a lot. Even if Payton didn’t want to go through every player on the roster.

Fans will get to see a lot of Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger in the competition to be Nix’s backup.

Denver and Minnesota will do battle at Empower Field at Mile High on Friday evening, then it’s a 2.5 week wait until the real fun begins.
