Karros goes into concussion protocol, but not before his 2-run homer powers Rockies to win

Rockies Report, Game 120:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: After allowing a pair of first-inning solo home runs, Tomoyuki Sugano and the Colorado bullpen combined for eight shutout innings, giving the offense time to finally awaken for three runs to eke out a 3-2 win over an Arizona Diamondbacks side that currently sits in wild-card position.

Kyle Karros snapped the scoreless streak in the sixth inning, providing the big blast with a 2-run homer — but also absorbed a big shot of his own in the bottom of the inning when he was involved in a collision with shortstop Ezequiel Tovar while going after a Ketel Marte ground ball.

Karros was removed from the game and is now in the concussion protocol, manager Warren Schaeffer confirmed after the game.

Hunter Goodman and Mickey Moniak finished the job in the seventh. Goodman led off the inning with a shot to the center-field wall that bounced back and rolled past center fielder Ryan Waldschmidt, allowing Goodman to dash to third base with a triple. Two batters later, Moniak’s fly ball to left field scored Goodman.

The Rockies improved to 47-73.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

When Sugano works, it often looks like this: Solo homers providing the only runs, few to no walks and a minimum amount of baserunners overall. As it was, Sugano limited the Diamondbacks to six runs — including just three after Arizona’s first-inning outburst.

The runs scored in time to earn Sugano his 12th win of the season. He finished with his seventh quality start.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Romano struck out Tawa, stranding Jorge Barrosa on second base. Romano earned his 11th save of the season and his seventh since joining the Rockies.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 2.45 — Jimmy Herget’s ERA over his last four trips to the mound. Herget had a 13.50 ERA in his previous 11 appearances.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Rockies go for the series win in a 1:40 p.m. matinee from Chase Field. Ryan Feltner and Merrill Kelly will get the ball for the Rox and Diamondbacks, respectively.
