New Broncos receiver Jaylen Waddle is a “big fan” of Marvin Mims

Jaylen Waddle took the podium at Broncos training camp on Tuesday and delivered some high praise for a teammate who has quietly been one of the standouts of camp, Marvin Mims.

Mims has been featured in a number of plays through the early days of training camp, hauling in some huge catches and showing off the explosive playmaking ability that has always been there. On day one alone, Mims ripped off a 50-plus yard catch from Bo Nix with Riley Moss in tight coverage and added a 35-plus yard grab from backup Jarrett Stidham. Reports from camp indicate Mims has been running a more diversified route tree and getting more involved in the offense than at any point in his career.

Waddle – who has had a phenomenal camp of his own, notably catching two balls over Pat Surtain II during one-on-one drills at Tuesday’s practice – didn’t hold back his admiration for Mims.

“I’m a big fan of Marvin Mims, I’m not gonna lie,” Waddle said.

And he was just getting started.

“He’s very explosive. I love watching him work. Love going out and being in meetings, just picking his brain,” the newcomer added. “Marvin’s a big play always ready to happen. You’ve gotta respect that type of speed.”

That kind of endorsement from Denver’s new star carries serious weight, especially for a player whose future with the team has been the subject of constant speculation. There have been debates about whether Mims will be traded, and real conversations about the limited snap count he could face as he fights for the wide receiver three position behind Courtland Sutton and Waddle.

Mims, a second-round selection in 2023, has earned two All-Pro and Pro Bowl nods for his return skills but has never eclipsed 40 percent of offensive snaps in a single season. He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract, and the team has acknowledged that they need to get Mims the ball more.

So far at camp, Mims is doing everything he can to make that impossible to ignore. And now, with Waddle publicly singing his praises, the case for keeping Mims, and featuring him, only grows stronger.

Whether it leads to a new contract or a bigger role in the offense, one thing is clear: Marvin Mims is making noise, and his teammates are taking notice.
