Rockies trade longest-tenured player on deadline day

The Colorado Rockies are sending reliever Antonio Senzatela to the Milwaukee Brewers for left-hander Mark Manfredi and shortstop Juan Martinez, per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Senzatela was playing catch in the Coors Field outfield when reports of the deal broke, and hadn’t been pulled off the field yet, according to Denver Post reporter Kyle Newman.

The 31-year-old right-hander was the longest-tenured active player on the Rockies, having debuted with Colorado in 2017. His departure leaves Kyle Freeland as the lone Rockies player remaining from the club’s back-to-back playoff teams in 2017 and 2018. Freeland debuted a day after Senzatela.

Senzatela reinvented himself this season, transitioning to the bullpen for the first time after nine years as a starter. The move unlocked a new gear — his fastball jumped to 97 mph and a new cutter became his most effective secondary pitch, with opponents hitting just .196 against it. He posted a 3.61 ERA in 34 appearances and 52.1 innings.

Milwaukee is essentially getting a rental. Senzatela is in the final guaranteed year of a five-year, $51 million deal. He has a t$14 million club option for 2027.

Colorado gets two lower-level prospects in return. Manfredi is a left-hander the Brewers drafted in the ninth round out of Dayton in 2023. Martinez is a young shortstop the just went from the Arizona Complex League to A-ball.

Senzatela ends his Rockies career 10th in pitching wins and strikeouts and with the seventh most innings pitched in Colorado history.

This is the second trade of the day for Paul DePodesta’s front office after dealing center fielder Brenton Doyle to the White Sox earlier, also getting two prospects back. Colorado could still move Mickey Moniak, Jake McCarthy or reliever Victor Vodnik before the deadline.
