Rockies pound Royals as Goodman blasts two homers on a four-hit night

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: When Hunter Goodman produces, he often does so via a barrage.

The All-Star catcher galvanized the Colorado offense with a four-hit, 5-RBI night — including two home runs that allowed him to break his own single-season club record for homers by a primary catcher — as the Rockies rallied from an early 4-0 deficit for a 12-6 rout of the Kansas City Royals at Coors Field on Saturday night.

Goodman’s first home run was part of a six-run third-inning explosion in which the Rox sent 11 batters to the plate. They punished Royals right-hander Luinder Avila, who walked three batters — including two in the first three batters to load the bases, setting up the Rox for the outburst. Goodman added a solo shot in the seventh.

Goodman capped his four-hit evening with an eighth-inning RBI single, extending the Rockies’ lead to 11-4 in the eighth inning. That hit was the Rockies’ fourth-consecutive single to open the eighth as they piled on to clinch the series.

Mickey Moniak subsequently brought home TJ Rumfield with a sacrifice fly for the Rockies’ final run. Kansas City tacked on xx runs at the expense of reliever Jimmy Herget, whose struggles continued as he hung a slider to John Rave, who crushed it into the right-field bleachers, and gave up a triple down the right-field line to Carter Jensen, who came home on a Starling Marte RBI groundout.

Victor Vodnik and Juan Mejia each tossed a scoreless inning in relief. Rumfield joined Goodman in having a massive night, going 3-for-5 with 3 RBI.

The Royals had 12 hits to the Rockies’ 16, but Colorado pitchers held the Royals to just one hit in 13 opportunities with runners in scoring position.

Rookie Cole Carrigg also worked at shortstop for the fourth time since his June call-up to the major leagues and started a 6-3 double play to help the Rox get out of the first inning with no damage after Ryan Feltner allowed a leadoff walk and a single.

Colorado improved to 44-67 and clinched the series.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

The six-run third inning allowed the Rockies to stick with Feltner after a rough first three innings in which he allowed four extra-base hits — including back-to-back third-inning homers to Jac Caglianone and Salvador Perez. Both pitches were elevated — the one to Caglianone was a hanging curve.

That reprieve allowed Feltner to settle in and leave after three shutout innings following the four runs he gave up in the first three frames. Feltner allowed two singles in the fourth but got out of it, then went 1-2-3 through the fifth before yielding a Nick Loftin double in the sixth inning that proved harmless after Feltner rallied to retire Michael Massey and John Rave.

It didn’t go into the books as a “quality start,” but Feltner was able to keep his pitch count manageable, and ultimately left with 87 pitches to his name and credit for his fourth win of the season.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Goodman led off the seventh inning with his 32nd home run of the season, pushing the Colorado edge to 9-4.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 5 — Rockies players with multiple hits as they pounded out 16 hits in total on the night.

WHAT’S NEXT: Kyle Freeland and Seth Lugo get the nods for the Rox and Royals, respectively. The Rox are looking for their first sweep since April 24-26 in Flushing against the New York Mets, and their first home sweep since April 6-8 over Houston. First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. MDT at Coors Field.
