Deion Sanders visits Shedeur Sanders at Browns camp

The meeting Todd Monken joked about all spring with Deion Sanders finally happened.

Colorado’s Coach Prime visited his son Shedeur at Cleveland Browns training camp Thursday, watching from the top row of the bleachers during the team’s second practice before sitting down with Monken and general manager Andrew Berry between sessions.

Back in June, Monken said he’d show up at Coach Prime’s next commercial shoot if that’s what it took to connect. Turns out, all it took was a trip to Berea.

“That was Deion Sanders, are you kidding me? Forget that it is Shedeur’s dad,” Monken said. “First of all, he did an unbelievable job with Shedeur — great kid, obviously an elite football player, hell, baseball player. And then as a coach, I mean, wow, everything he’s achieved, that was awesome.”

Monken said most of the conversation with the Hall of Famer focused on Sanders’ coaching experiences at Jackson State and Colorado and the challenges around NIL in college. Monken also confirmed to Deion that Shedeur nearly got selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2025 draft.

“It was part coach, part father, which is what it should be,” Monken said.

The visit marks a 180 from last year, when Shedeur asked his father to stay away from his first NFL training camp because of the limited reps and the circus it would create. The rookie called the attention around his famous dad “a gift and a curse at the same time.”

This year Shedeur is competing for the starting job and his dad was welcome.

Shedeur took first-team reps Thursday as he and Deshaun Watson continue alternating with the ones in their battle to start the Sept. 13 opener.

“You have to make a decision when you two-spot — someone’s got to go with the twos, however you do it, to get the same amount of reps,” Monken said. “So, we basically divide up the groups.”

Father and son walked the field together after practice.

Deion also visited his other son, Shilo Sanders, at Tampa Bay’s training camp before Shilo’s release.

Sanders is entering his fourth season at Colorado. The Buffaloes, looking to bounce back from a 3-9 campaign, open fall camp Sunday at Fountain-Fort Carson High School in Colorado Springs before moving practice to Boulder. The team will stay on the UCCS campus during the first week.

CU’s season opener is Sept. 3 at Georgia Tech.
