It’s been since September of 2023 that a Rockies player has won NL Rookie of the Month and that was Nolan Jones.

MLB announced on June 3 that Rockies first baseman TJ Rumfield was the Rookie of the Month in May.

After hitting .263 in March and April, Rumfield took a giant leap forward by hitting .310 along with four home runs, 12 RBIs and a .400 OBP.

The Virginia native also racked up three doubles and had a good eye by getting walked 10 times and scored 13 runs in the 25 games he played in during the month of May.

Even though TJ Rumfield had a great month, the Rockies went 8-20 and were outscored 190-114. In April, the Rockies went 13-14 and were only outscored by nine runs. He also hasn’t gone more than three games in a row without a hit.

Rumfield is the eighth player in franchise history to win the award since it started back in 2001.

Among all qualified rookies, Rumfield’s 14.9 strikeout percentage is tied-for-third lowest with Sam Antonacci of the White
Sox. Those two only trailed Detroit’s Kevin McGonigle and Cleveland’s Chase DeLauter.

In January, the Rockies traded away pitcher, Angel Chivilli to the New York Yankees in exchange for TJ Rumfield after he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 12th-round of the 2021 MLB Draft.

After getting drafted by the Phillies, Rumfield was traded to the Yankees in the same year.

In 2023, Rumfield played for the Somerset Patriots and won the Minor League Gold Glove Award for first basemen.

This season, his glove has been great defensively by not committing an error in 374 chances.

Even with the Rockies not having the best season so far, they are still showing some promise and excitement at 20th and Blake.

Let’s see if TJ Rumfield can win a second-Rookie of the Month year award or even Rookie of the Year in 2026.
