Pat Surtain II gets raise from Broncos in contract adjustment

The Denver Broncos have rewarded their cornerstone defender with a well-deserved bump in pay.

Star cornerback Pat Surtain II and the Broncos have agreed to a contract adjustment that gives the 2024 Defensive Player of the Year a $5 million raise in 2026, with the chance to earn another $5 million through Pro Bowl or All-Pro incentives, NFL Network reported Tuesday.

The adjustment comes in just the first year of Surtain’s four-year, $96 million extension — a deal that briefly made him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history when he signed it ahead of the 2024 season. But that title didn’t last long.

In the days and months after Surtain put pen to paper, a wave of cornerbacks leapfrogged him on the pay scale, including Trent McDuffie ($31 million per year), Sauce Gardner ($30.1 million), Derek Stingley Jr. ($30 million), Jaycee Horn ($25 million) and Jalen Ramsey ($24.1 million).

Surtain was previously slated to earn a base salary of $17.6 million in 2026, according to OverTheCap data. The $5 million raise pushes his cap hit to roughly $21.8 million, the second-highest on Denver’s books behind right tackle Mike McGlinchey ($23.8 million).

The Broncos have the room to absorb it. The team entered June with $25.7 million in available cap space.

A two-time first-team All-Pro and the anchor of one of the NFL’s top defenses, Surtain has emerged as a face of the Broncos’ resurgence under head coach Sean Payton. His original extension included $77.5 million in guarantees, but the rapidly rising market quickly turned the deal into one of the league’s most team-friendly contracts at the position. Tuesday’s adjustment makes it clear that Denver intends to keep its best player happy.
