Avalanche fall apart in third period, now in stunning 2-0 series hole to Vegas

The Colorado Avalanche needed to win a hockey game in the worst way on Friday night.

And they couldn’t pull off.

The Avs collapsed in the third period of Game 2 of the Western Conference Final, losing 3-1 and falling into an 0-2 series hole. The Ball Arena crowd left stunned as Colorado blew a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes and couldn’t tie the series up one game apiece.

The first goal from Vegas came off a snipe from superstar Jack Eichel, beating Avalanche goalie Scott Wedgewood clean. And just 2:07 later it was Knights forward Ivan Barbashev making it 2-1 after a tough turnover by Colorado defenseman Devon Toews.

Not only was the lead gone in a poof, but suddenly Vegas was on top and the energy in building was zapped.

The Avalanche tried to make a comeback and tie it 2-2 late, but Brock Nelson was stoned by Carter Hart on a great look. That led to an empty-net goal Barbashev from and sealed the shocking loss.

The second period was marked by penalties and great chances, but no goals for either side, as the Avs tried to build on a 1-0 first period lead. They could never get it done and that proved costly.

Avalanche forward Martin Necas took two penalties in a span of a few seconds. A slash and a trip 1:33 into the frame set Vegas up with a four-minute power play.

Luckily, Eichel committed interference only 46 seconds later and that led to four-on-four hockey. Colorado dominated those two minutes, including a beautiful move behind the net by Nazem Kadri to set up a point-blank look from Nathan MacKinnon, unfortunately he couldn’t convert.

Kadri also had a great chance against Hart who came up with a clutch save. Hart’s been very solid for the Knights through two games, giving up only three total goals.

Necas got redemption late in the period when he beautifully went coast-to-coast to draw a slashing call against Shea Theodore. That gave the Avs a power play that bled 42 seconds into the third, but it looked ugly without Cale Makar available.

It remained 1-0 Avalanche after the second with Wedgewood stopping all 16 Knights shots through 40 minutes.

And Wedgewood was a monster for the Avalanche in the first period. Vegas had several premium chances, including a breakaway by Knights star Mitch Marner and Wedgewood stoned him not once, but twice.

Colorado forward Ross Colton eventually broke the ice with 3:01 to go. Colton cleaned up a rebound off a shot from Brent Burns and made it 1-0 Avalanche. It was the first time they had scored the opening tally since Game 2 against Minnesota.

But this one stings. Colton had one of the lone highlights of the night, with Wedgewood a handful of others.

Even without Makar, this simply isn’t good enough from the Avalanche right now. They looked flat in both games and got outplayed and outworked.

This is the Western Conference Final and Colorado needs to wake up in a hurry. If not, it could be summer vacation 3.5 weeks before anyone wanted when the clear and stated goal was the Stanley Cup.

Game 3 is on Sunday night in Vegas, with the Avalanche essentially trying to save their season.
