Nazem Kadri scores twice against old team, Avs obliterate the Flames

The Colorado Avalanche acquired Nazem Kadri at the trade deadline for a variety of reasons.

Scoring goals was a big one of them.

Kadri did that twice for the Avs on Monday night at Ball Arena and they came against his old team, the Calgary Flames. Colorado steamrolled to a 9-2 victory and Nazem Kadri actually earned his both tallies in an electric first period in which the Avs scored five goals.

Kadri’s came only a little more than a minute apart. The first was during a 5-on-3 and the second on another power play, sending the crowd into a tizzy.

Other goal-scorers for the Avalanche were Jack Drury, Gabriel Landeskog, Parker Kelly, Nathan MacKinnon, Martin Necas, Sam Malinski, and Artturi Lehkonen. For MacKinnon it was the 49th time he’s found the back of the net this season, on the verge of 50-plus goals for the second time in his career.

Colorado now has a 108 points as they close in on the Presidents’ Trophy, No. 1 seed in the Western Conference and Central Division title. The Dallas Stars have 100 points, but have also played one more game than the Avs, who again lead their rivals by a comfortable eight points.

The only downside for Colorado was superstar defenseman Cale Makar left after two periods of play with an upper-body injury. The Avalanche were up 6-1 at the time, so hopefully it was precautionary.

Kadri has made it’s clear he’s thrilled to be back in Denver, but also holds no hard feelings towards the Flames. Even still, it had to have been sweet to score a couple times in a landslide Avalanche victory.

Next up is a date with the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday before a huge showdown in Dallas on Saturday. You can bet Nazem Kadri and the rest of the guys would like to wrap up the No. 1 seed sooner rather than later.
