Broncos, rest of NFL won’t see Goedert hit the market; he’s staying with Eagles

The Broncos still haven’t added a free agent from beyond their roster since the start of the new league year, and tight end Dallas Goedert won’t become the first.

Widely expected to hit the market as his contract was scheduled to void last Wednesday when the league year began, the Eagles and Goedert came to terms on a restructured one-year, $10-million deal Sunday, per multiple reports.

The two sides agreed during the week to extend the deadline past Wednesday to work on negotiations for a deal, extending the window and dealing Goedert’s potential entry into the market. Now, that won’t happen at all.

Had Goedert hit the market, he would have been arguably the most attractive player at any position. He posted career highs last year in receptions (60) and touchdowns (591), finishing with 591 yards. He’s notched at least 500 receiving yards in all but one of the last seven seasons.

No Broncos tight end has accumulated 500 receiving yards since Noah Fant’s 670-yard campaign in 2021; he reached that mark in each of his three Denver seasons before being sent to Seattle as part of the Russell Wilson trade in March 2022.

WHO’S LEFT ON THE TIGHT END MARKET FOR THE BRONCOS IF THEY CHOOSE TO ADD ANYONE?

There are still some options available for the Broncos, including David Njoku, Jonnu Smith and Zach Ertz. Ertz is coming off of a knee injury suffered late last season and is unlikely to be ready until Week 1.

Njoku, a long-time Browns stalwart, was deemed expendable after the emergence in Cleveland last year of third-round pick Harold Fannin Jr., a player the Broncos evaluated and interviewed last year during the pre-draft process.

The Broncos brought back their entire tight-end room, re-signing Adam Trautman, as well as Nate Adkins and Lucas Krull. Denver declined to give restricted-free-agent tenders to Adkins and Krull, but re-signed them on lower salary-cap figures.
