Sean Payton happy with playoff spot, reminds Broncos still have three goals to go

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is leading the hottest team in the NFL.

The Broncos won their 11th game in a row on Sunday, defeating the Green Bay Packers 34-26 in a thriller at Empower Field at Mile High.

With the victory, Denver has officially clinched a postseason spot for the second year in a row. But at 12-2, they have bigger aspirations than just being in the dance.

In his postgame press conference, Sean Payton was asked about making it to the playoffs, but quickly cautioned the Broncos still have plenty out in front of them.

“It’s nice to clinch a playoff berth. Goal one is try to go win your division, goal two is try to get the best seed and then goal three is try to win a world championship. And so, we still haven’t really accomplished one, two or three,” Payton said.

Denver has control of the AFC West, but the 10-4 Chargers still lurk after knocking the Chiefs out of postseason contention on Sunday.

“Remember, (goal) one is win the division, so we’re still going,” Payton said.

The Broncos will host L.A. in Week 18, so that game could have a lot on the line. On the other hand, Denver is now one game up on New England for the No. 1 seed and holds the tiebreakers with the Patriots. They’re in great shape with Jacksonville coming to town next weekend.

And Sean Payton had to shoutout the fans at Empower Field at Mile High, who made the stadium shake on multiple occasions.

“I thought our crowd was outstanding. We got penalties because of it. The atmosphere was fantastic,” Payton said.

If the Broncos keep this up, the road to the Super Bowl will go through the Mile High City. Win that and Sean Payton will check off all three goals on his list.
