Nathan MacKinnon plays hero in OT, scores two as Avs beat Rangers

Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon did it again.

The Hart Trophy favorite played hero for the Avs on Saturday afternoon against the New York Rangers, scoring two clutch goals in a 3-2 overtime win.

The game probably shouldn’t have ever gone to OT, as the Rangers tied it in the final minute, but not without controversy. It appeared like they played the puck (twice) with a high-stick before Artemi Panarin equalized the score with 42 seconds left. The officials took a long review, but let the goal count. 

That might have ticked off the Avalanche and MacKinnon, who after scoring in the third period to make it 2-1, beat New York goalie Igor Shesterkin clean for the game-winner.

The Avalanche’s other goal came from Parker Kelly, giving them a 1-0 lead in the second period. Kelly had a slick tip of a Sam Malinski shot from deep, his sixth goal of the season.

And then after the Rangers tied it multiple times, Nathan MacKinnon took over. The November First Star of the Month already has two multi-goal games in December, clearly looking like the best player in the league.

After a tough outing against the Islanders, Avalanche goalie Mackenzie Blackwood made 24 saves and Colorado is now 20-2-6 on the season. The Avs had their 17-game point streak snapped against the Islanders, but immediately started a new one.

Next up is a quick turnaround with another day game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. Nathan MacKinnon will be there — and it wouldn’t shock anyone if he did something special.
