Martin Necas glad the Avs ‘gave me some time’ to sign extension

Colorado Avalanche winger Martin Necas is here to stay.

The forward signed a lucrative contract extension on Thursday morning, worth $11.5 million per season over the next eight years.

Necas met with the media after Avs practice and is excited to be in Denver through the prime of his career.

“Yeah I think this team definitely fits my style of hockey and the way I play. We have so many great players here, it doesn’t matter who you play with. At the end of the day, I signed a great contract… I feel like this team has a great future, a bright future,” Necas said.

There was some reports over the summer that perhaps Martin Necas wasn’t “overly thrilled” about his time in Colorado after a massive trade from the Carolina Hurricanes that involved the beloved Mikko Rantanen.

Necas did acknowledge he needed some time to digest everything and make sure the Avalanche was where he wanted to be. But he got to that point early in the young 2025-26 NHL season.

“I feel like it wasn’t super tough. I’m glad management gave me some time to figure out, for me to decide where I want to basically spend my next eight years of life. Not just me but my family as well and I’m super happy. I’ll be happy to be here for eight more years and call this home,” Necas said.

Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland also spoke, and it was clear he was excited to have this contract inked and there to be no drama about Martin Necas potentially leaving in free agency next summer.

“Well, I think he’s an electric top-line winger. 26, turning 27-years-old, they’re hard to find. They’re hard to acquire. You’ve got to draft them or it’s a steep price whether it’s in free agency or a trade,” MacFarland said.

The Avs paid a steep price for Necas, unloading Rantanen before he hit free agency. Still, through the first chunk of the season Necas has been Colorado’s third or fourth best player behind the likes of Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar.

“I think the fit has been really good and his speed, his skill, his talent blends in really well here, but it would blend in anywhere to be honest. He’s a very good hockey player and we’re lucky to have him” MacFarland said.

Head coach Jared Bednar is a big believer in Martin Necas and has already seen his game go to another level with seven goals and six assists through 11 games.

This was a big piece of the puzzle for the Avalanche to solve. And with Martin Necas locked in for a long time, a championship or bust season rolls on.
