Rockies still have one bright spot among worst-ever season

The Colorado Rockies are having their worst season in franchise history, likely to set a new record for most losses on Monday night, but within the pain has been the bright spot of the best individual catcher season in franchise history.

All-Star Hunter Goodman took home more hardware on Monday, being named National League Player of the Week. He hit .476 with two doubles, three homers and 10 RBI over the past week. Goodman joined Dante Bichette as the only Rockies ever to have three hits and multiple RBI in three-straight games, and the last big leaguer to hit those marks was Bo Bichette in 2022.

It’s the eighth time the Rockies have had a standout player of the week in the 2020s, with Goodman getting his first nod of the recognition. Warming Bernabel got one last month, Brenton Doyle last year, and Nolan Jones, C.J. Cron (twice), Brendan Rodgers and Joshua Fuentes are the other recipients this decade.

Goodman may be the best of the bunch, already having the best catcher season in Rockies franchise history at a best 3.3 fWAR, on the back of a 124 wRC+, the second mark outside Chris Iannetta’s 129 in 2008 in over 100 fewer plate appearances.

The funniest part about Goodman, 25, turning into the best catcher the Rockies have ever had is that it’s completely unexpected. The 2021 fourth-round pick was all but moved off the position, playing just 23 of his first 93 big league games at the spot. Across all levels, Goodman only played 48 games behind the plate in 2023 and 2024 combined.

He came into the year as kind of a make-or-break player to even get on the roster, let alone become the starting catcher and the best one the Rockies have ever had at that. On top of that, this is Goodman’s first true extended stint in the big leagues, having played only 93 games coming into 2025.

On the year, Goodman is slashing .284/.330/.541 with 29 home runs and 86 RBI. He’s had the most dingers and runs driven in for a Rockies catcher ever before the mid-summer classic. He leads the Rockies this season in both stats, and he paces in NL catchers in a ton of metrics.
