Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes weren’t winners on the field last week as they squandered away Friday’s contest against Georgia Tech en route to a 27-20 loss. However, the program had a winner off the field, as former superstar Travis Hunter announced the birth of his son.
Throughout his years as a collegiate coach, Prime has emphasized the importance of balancing his life as a father and a coach as he’s shared the sidelines with his two sons, Shedeur and Shilo, for the better part of the decade. While he’s had two sons to take care of, he’s also made it known that Hunter is essentially another son to him.
At his weekly media availability on Tuesday, Prime sent a powerful, heartfelt message to Hunter that all fathers or soon-to-be-fathers should listen to.
“I’m taking a deep breath, because I love him to life, I love him like he’s a son. It’s funny when your son is now a father. So that’s why I had to really step back, it’s a beautiful thing. The thing that I told him is, ‘Let’s correct all the things that we purposely think that we didn’t receive as a child, and let’s correct that in our fatherhood.’ Let’s do that. And no matter what happens in life, let’s make sure we the best darn father that ever walked. That’s what I told him, and I’m proud of him, and I love him to life, and I miss him dearly,” Sanders said.

Prime knows that there are plenty of things that are bigger in life than football. He showed it time and time again over the previous couple of seasons as he mentored Shedeur, Shilo, Travis and even Jimmy Horn Jr. week in and week out. He’s emphasized previously that he likes coaching in college because he can help these young men grow, and has always put his players first, just like any good father would.
There’s a lot to discuss with Sanders and the Buffs on the field, but the message off the field has never wavered. It’s family first in Boulder.
