Sean Payton discusses Bo Nix throwing his first two interceptions of camp

Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix threw his first two interceptions of training camp on Friday.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as this Broncos defense is incredible and the first of the two picks by safety Talanoa Hufanga was beautiful.

He was playing fairly near the line of scrimmage, about eight yards off, and just jumped up in the air and made a phenomenal move to snag a football with a lot of velocity on it. Hufanga took the ball the other way, and it likely would’ve gone for a touchdown in a game setting.

After practice, Broncos head coach Sean Payton called the interception by Talanoa Hufanga “sick,” meaning it was a great play.

Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan’s Zach Bye asked Payton about Bo Nix throwing a couple of INTs, and the first one he wasn’t upset about. An All-Pro safety did something special.

“Well, the play to Hufanga, you look at it, you talk about it, then you’re like ‘alright.’ And then I think there was one other,” Payton said.

Basically, Payton is saying Bo Nix shouldn’t fret it. The next one was made by Defensive Player of the year Pat Surtain II, and Payton elaborated more on that.

“That meeting might sound like ‘alright, here’s the play, what are you thinking here? And then hey, you’ve got to be alert.’ There’s one where Pat (Surtain II) was floating back off, (Courtland) Sutton was on a double move and it was just a location error. And you clean it up,” Payton said. “It’s understanding there’s a blind area that ball can’t go and then it doesn’t happen again.”

Surtain made a great move on the football, but Payton felt Bo Nix should learn from that INT and not make the same mistake in a game.

Bye followed up asking the head coach if he was good with Nix exploring in practice, essentially saying these stats don’t count and it doesn’t hurt the team.

Payton explained that the QB has to be aware of certain defensive rotations at the line, but ultimately concluded it wasn’t that big of a deal.

“I’m good with his current exploration,” Payton said.

At the end of the day, Bo Nix taking chances in a practice setting is fine. It’s better to get burned now then during the regular season when it really counts.

It sounds like Payton will have a chat with him about the second interception, with the first one being “sick,” but these two plays are nothing to lose sleep over.
