Broncos hold ceremony, celebrate progress made on training facility construction

Training camp has looked a little different for the Denver Broncos and their fans this season. While the competition on the field has been fiery and entertaining, the experience outside of the white lines has been changed due to the ongoing construction down at Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit as the franchise builds a new training facility that is scheduled to open up next spring.

An important milestone was reached on Friday, as the final timber beam was placed with a Broncos flag and an American flag attached to it. The Broncos held a Topping Out ceremony to celebrate.

For those who aren’t familiar with a Topping Out ceremony, it is a construction tradition that can be traced back to Scandinavia in the 700s.

“I’m excited and thankful to be here today as we celebrate the topping out, a fantastic milestone in the project, where we place the final panel on top of the building structure and celebrate all of the hard work that has gotten us to this point,” Jeremy Atcheson, VP of Turner Construction, said. “This ceremony has ancient Scandinavian and Native American practices to appease spirits displaced by construction and ensure good luck to the building and its occupants, today, we stand with our crews to celebrate this milestone and a true milestone that we’re all excited about, that is for a football team that we’re all passionate about.”

There were a plethora of signatures on the final timber beam, a lot of which came from team staff members in a cool gesture from ownership. Carrie Walton-Penner was the last member of the organization to sign. Other top guns in the organization such as Greg Penner, Sean Payton, George Paton and Damani Leech have signed as well.

The Penner duo also reportedly climbed up to the top of the crane on Thursday to get a good look at the progress they’ve made on the new facility.

Now, the fancy part of the can start on the interior, where the team will put in all of the state-of-the-art features that are set to make this place a top training facility in the NFL.

There’s a reason why the patented hill that used to house a sea of orange and blue during training camp is no longer there, as fans have now had to sit in some bleachers and listen to the constant sounds of construction while they get a glimpse at the most-hyped Broncos squad in 10 years.

If things over in Burnham Yard continue to pick up steam, maybe the franchise could hold another topping out ceremony in a handful of years with a new stadium instead of a practice facility.
