Sean Payton says Broncos must ‘live’ goals and dreams, not just have them

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton isn’t afraid to talk about the Super Bowl during training camp this year.

Last week, he said the Broncos can’t be afraid of the “end game,” which of course would be a championship.

After practice on Thursday, Payton got asked about the energy and drive that Denver is bringing to each practice as the days start to stack up.

His answer will get Broncos Country fired up going all the way through it.

“Yeah, I just said this to them. There are certain goals that you have as a team and there appears to be the right mix of youth and then some veteran leadership,” Payton said.

Of course, QB Bo Nix and most of his wide receivers are that youth, along with several standouts on defense. Meanwhile, veterans like Courtland Sutton and Evan Engram can be safety blankets for Nix, as well as the leadership of a guy like left tackle Garett Bolles. Pat Surtain II is now a vet, along with Zach Allen, D.J. Jones, Dre Greenlaw and others.

For Sean Payton, he likes the offseason the Broncos had and how camp has gone thus far as July is about to turn into August.

“All 32 teams start the season with the same aspirations and goals, so what separates yourself from those other teams? And I think it’s those ingredients. It gets back to who we’re bringing in, who we’ve drafted. You’re finding guys that want to play at a high level” Payton said.

Denver went 10-7 a season ago, but now has the attention of a lot of national media folks. The Broncos seem to be a trendy dark-horse to make a deep postseason run.

“They understand that it’s not easy to do. We can write down our goals and dreams and we can recite them, and then you have to live them,” Sean Payton said.

That could be printed as an inspirational quote. It’s one thing to have big aspirations, it’s another to actually live them out.

“I think I’ve been encouraged relative to the leadership and direction following last season. A lot of young guys played,” Payton said. “I like this team.”

Heading into year three, it’s clear this is the favorite Broncos team yet for Sean Payton. Now it’s up to the players to aim high, and hopefully land where they want to be come January and February.
