Two longtime Rockies share wholesome father-son moment

On the eve of Father’s Day weekend, the favorite father-son tandem for Colorado Rockies fans shared a very cute moment elsewhere in Major League Baseball over the weekend.

Eric Young Sr. and Eric Young Jr., now both first base coaches in the American League West, saw their Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners matchup over the past few days. During Saturday’s game in the middle innings, the father left the son a snack in the coaching box. Likely one of many times the baseball lifers shared some eats at the ballpark.

According to the broadcast, which caught the moment, Senior left Junior some fruit chews and a protein bar, saying, “I’m a proud papa. I gotta make sure junior is taken care of.”

The two actually squared off as coaches in the same division the last few years as well with father working for the Atlanta Braves and son working for the Washington Nationals.

But both Youngs are remembered in their playing days for being Rockies. Both played big league ball for over a decade and spent most of their time in Colorado — five seasons for each. Father was an All-Star and hit one of the biggest home runs in Rockies history as they debuted big league ball in Denver with a leadoff dinger. He helped the Rockies to the 1995 playoffs and was an All-Star, taking home a Silver Slugger for his performance at second base in 1996 while leading the league in stolen bases.

He was traded in 1997 to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Pedro Astacio, who had a really solid career as a pitcher in purple. But before the deal, Young Sr. spent about two weeks playing with a young Todd Helton, something Young Jr. did for all five of his seasons with the Rockies.

Junior wasn’t quite as good as senior, but he too helped the Rockies to the postseason — contributing to the 2009 club in his rookie year. He too led the National League in stolen bases for a season, in 2013. But was traded that season for another good pitcher, Collin McHugh. And like his father, Junior quickly joined the coaching ranks after he hung up his own spikes.
