Sean Payton plays it cool on J.K. Dobbins, but confirms the Broncos interest

Running back J.K. Dobbins is visiting the Denver Broncos, according to multiple reports from Wednesday.

On Thursday, after the Broncos wrapped up their last day of OTAs, head coach Sean Payton confirmed the team’s interest in the free agent.

“Yeah, he’s coming in. I think he got in last night. I think he’s in the building, or he’s going to be in the building here pretty soon. We’ll have a chance to visit with him and then we’ll see where it goes,” Payton said.

Dobbins posted an Instagram story overlooking a golf course in Denver on Wednesday night, so he’s clearly here. Perhaps he even went to dinner with Payton and the Broncos brass that evening, but Payton is going to play it cool until there’s pen to paper on a contract.

“Another good football player that we’ve seen first hand. I’ve seen (him) for a while and just the importance of that position group. We really like the group right now we’re working with, it’s just another opportunity to possibly bring in another good football player to help us win,” Payton said.

The Broncos drafted RJ Harvey in the second-round of this year’s NFL Draft, and also have the likes of Audric Estime, Jaleel McLaughlin, Tyler Badie and Blake Watson on the roster. However, adding a veteran like J.K. Dobbins could definitely help a young room.

He ran for 905 yards and nine touchdowns with the Chargers a season ago in only 13 games. Injuries have been a concern, as Dobbins has been in the league since 2020 and only played 37 career games. He missed the entire 2021 season after blowing out his knee in the preseason.

On the one hand, oft-injured guys can be scary to sign. On the other, Dobbins should have plenty left in the tank and is still only 26-years-old.

If the visit goes well, we could get word of him agreeing to a contract at any moment. If it doesn’t, and he leaves town, maybe J.K. Dobbins won’t be a Bronco after all.
