Rockies begin homestand with thud and fall to 4-21, but Beck stays hot

Rockies Report, Game 25:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Jordan Beck’s astonishing burst of power continued Friday night with a pair of solo home runs, but they were not enough to stop Colorado’s losing streak as the Rox fell for a fourth consecutive time, this one by an 8-7 count to the Cincinnati Reds in font of a chilled, damp crowd announced at 21,743.

Beck’s first shot saw him golf an 82-MPH Andrew Abbott change-up 404 feet into the left-field pavilion, a shot that started a three-run third-inning rally that tied the game at 4-apiece.

Beck’s second blast saw him destroy a Tony Santillan slider that hung at the top of the strike zone, crushing it 437 feet deep into the left-field stands near the concourse.

Hunter Goodman went 2-for-3 with two walks, while Michael Toglia continued to dig his way out of a disastrous start to the season with a 3-for-5, 3-RBI night; both contributed doubles to the cause.

But a rough night for Kyle Freeland and Angel Chivilli undid the Rox.

STARTER’S REPORT: Freeland returned after being pulled from his previous start due to a blister but found himself in trouble early. After retiring two batters to open the game, three consecutive Reds reached base, with Noelvi Marte capping the run with a single to right field that scored Elly De La Cruz to put Cincinnati in front 1-0.

A three-run third exacerbated matters, with most of the damage coming when Spencer Steer dropped a 3-2 cutter at the bottom of the strike zone into the left-field seats for a two-run homer. Freeland loaded the bases with one out in the fifth on three singles, and that ended his night; Chivilli gave up a two-RBI single to Blake Dunn two batters later.

Freeland failed to record a 1-2-3 inning and allowed a season-high 10 hits. But a fifth-inning rally took him off the hook; Chivilli took the loss after allowing a single, a walk and hitting Steer to load the bases. Scott Alexander relieved Chivillie and walked Blake Dunn to score one run; a subsequent groundout scored Cincinnati’s final run.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Mickey Moniak swung and missed to end the bottom of the ninth as the Rox went down in order.


ROCKIES NUMBER TO NOTE: 5 — Beck’s team-leading home-run total for the season, all of which have come in the last two days.

WHAT’S NEXT: Antonio Senzatela starts on Saturday as the Rockies celebrate the 30th annivesary of Coors Field. Blake Street Bomber Dante Bichette will be on hand; he will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the actual first pitch, which is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. MDT.
