Rockies fall in 11 despite strong start from Feltner, ninth-inning rally

Rockies Report, Game 22:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: They fought back and wiggled out of being down to their last strike in the top of the ninth, but a pair of scoreless frames despite the extra-innings advantage of opening with a runner on second doomed Colorado to a 4-3, 11-inning loss at Kansas City on Tuesday night.

Colorado dropped to 4-18 and still has yet to win consecutive games this season. The Rox are 1-5 in one-run games and now sit 12 games back in the National League West.

The game was extended in the top of the ninth when catcher Jacob Stallings delivered a bases-clearing, two-out double down the left-field line.

Stallings capitalized off the patience of Ryan McMahon, Hunter Goodman and Michael Toglia and the loss of control by ex-Colorado reliever Carlos Estévez, who walked the bases loaded after recording the first two outs in the ninth, setting up Stallings for the game-flipping swing.

But that fragile 3-2 edge didn’t last long. Salvador Perez blooped Seth Halvorsen’s first pitch in the bottom of the inning to right field. Freddy Fermin then pinch-ran for Perez and advanced to third on Maikel Garcia’s subsequent double, then scored on Michael Massey’s sacrifice fly.

Garcia then got caught wandering too far off second base, and a fly out to center field followed, sending the game to extra innings.

But Colorado’s offense foundered from there.

STARTER’S REPORT: Ryan Feltner bounced back from a rough night at Dodger Stadium seven days ago with his finest work of the season, scattering three hits and a walk over seven innings.

It was Feltner’s deepest work into a game in his last 15 starts, since he went seven innings last July 21 at San Francisco.

This was also Feltner’s sixth quality start in his last 10 trips to the mound dating back to last September.

Feltner shut out the Royals through five innings before Drew Waters — who had the only hit off Feltner in the first five frames — finally got to him, sending a 1-0 changeup over the right-field fence to put Kansas City in front, 1-0. But that was all as Feltner dropped his ERA to 3.86.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Fermin lined a Tyler Kinley bases-loaded offering to center field in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving the Royals the walk-off win.

ROCKIES NUMBER TO NOTE: 6 — Number of walks Rockies batters took Tuesday night, matching a season high set last Saturday against Washington and April 4 against the Athletics. Colorado’s walk percentage since Clint Hurdle arrived as hitting coach has increased from 7.3 percent to 11.0 percent; its strikeout percentage remains roughly the same; 29.6 percent before and 29.7 percent in the last four games.
