Broncos spend $400,000 to replace old, worn turf for season’s final game

Jan 7, 2023, 11:21 AM | Updated: 11:24 am

The Denver Broncos aren’t cutting any corners.

Team CEO Greg Penner, the leader of the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group (WPFOG), spent $400,000 this week for brand new turf to be installed at Empower Field at Mile High. The Broncos only have one game left, Sunday against the Chargers, but Penner felt a change was needed.

9NEWS and 104.3 The Fan Broncos insider Mike Klis broke the news on Saturday morning.

Klis mentions the recent events the stadium has hosted, and the playing surface was looking worn and old during the Broncos Dec. 18 game with the Cardinals. That’s the main photo above for this story, a pregame shot.

Penner noticed the same thing, so he did something about it. An hour after the first report, the team tweeted a video of the work being done.

That opening shot shows just how bad it was. Rather than play the Chargers on glorified dirt on Sunday, the Broncos will have fresh, new grass.

And remember, the WPFOG is also upgrading the stadium with $100 million worth of renovations this offseason. The team might not be winning, yet, but the new ownership group isn’t cutting corners.
