Jerry Rosburg calls John Harbaugh his “best friend” and raves about Jim

Jan 6, 2023, 2:44 PM

This is an interesting twist.

As the Broncos are making a run at Jim Harbaugh to be the team’s the next head coach, their current interim man has a great relationship with the entire Harbaugh family.

At his press conference on Friday, Jerry Rosburg was asked about Denver courting Jim to lead the team next. Rosburg launched into a long answer, including about Jim’s brother, John, the head coach of the Ravens. Rosburg and John coached together for years in Baltimore, but apparently they were much more than co-workers.

“The Harbaugh family, they’ve had a huge impact on my life. John is my best friend and has been for 30-some years. He was there in 1993 when my daughter Megan was born, and throughout my life he’s been a very strong influence and a very strong friend in the deepest sense,” Rosburg said.

Rosburg went on to mention his children call John and Jim’s father, Jack Harbaugh, “grandpa Jack.” He said they’re truly family, and the two groups jokingly refer to themselves as either the “Harburgs” or “Rosbaughs” when the families get together. In terms of Jim, Rosburg spoke glowingly about him as well.

“I’ve known Jim since he was a player, through my relationship with John. I watched him as a player and admired him so greatly as a player. So competitive and just the fire that he has I think comes naturally for him, because he’s been involved in football his whole life,” Rosburg said.

He continued, talking about Jim’s highly successful transition from QB to coach.

“That has followed through with his coaching career. You see Jim’s success he’s had at every level. He started as a lower-level assistant at Oakland and just was a grinder. In my view, he humbled himself. You go from a star NFL quarterback, ‘captain comeback,’ and then you go sit in an office in the corner and grind on football into the wee hours of the night,” Rosburg said.

What does this all mean for the Broncos? Well it certainly can’t hurt the current interim coach is best family friends with the guy they’re trying to make the next permanent coach. And perhaps, Rosburg could stay on Jim’s staff as a special teams coordinator. Jim certainly has Rosburg’s respect.

“He’s a fabulous football coach and I would say a great personality as well. He’s a brilliant man,” Rosburg said. “I have a great appreciation for Jim and all his talents. I love that whole family.”

Stay tuned. Another Harbaugh to Denver connection may have just revealed itself.
