Report: Former Broncos WR Ed McCaffrey out as UNC football head coach

The Ed McCaffrey tenure as head football coach at the University of Northern Colorado is finished.

The former Broncos WR “will not return” to the program for a third season, according to Zach Barnett of Football Scoop.

McCaffrey coached two full seasons in Greeley, with the start of his time delayed due the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bears went 3-8 under McCaffrey in both 2021 and 2022, with their season wrapping up on Saturday. UNC lost to Eastern Washington 45-21 to close out the McCaffrey era.

It was a family affair at Northern Colorado, with two of Ed’s sons involved with the team. Max McCaffrey was the offensive coordinator and Dylan McCaffrey was the quarterback. Both of them attended Valor Christian High School, where Ed coached from 2018-2019. Ed’s other two boys, Christian and Luke, also attended Valor. Christian is a star running back with the 49ers and Luke plays college football at Rice.

Ed won two Super Bowls with the Broncos in the late 1990s and was a key part of an offense headlined by John Elway, Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe and Rod Smith. He’s not in the team’s Ring of Fame (yet), a decision that doesn’t sit well with a lot of fans.

His time at Valor Christian was successful, with the team winning a state title in 2018. But it didn’t work at the college ranks, at least in Greeley, with the Bears going just 6-16 over his two seasons at the helm.
