ROCKIES

Two Rockies finalists for best hitters in the league at their position

Oct 27, 2022, 10:05 AM

The Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros begin their showdown on Friday for baseball’s most prestigious trophy, but two Colorado Rockies have a chance at earning some hardware, Denver’s ball club shared on Thursday.

Both Brendan Rodgers and Charlie Blackmon have been named finalists at their position for Silver Slugger awards. The Rockies have won 32 silver slugger awards, an honor first introduced by baseball in 1980, to give the best offensive player at each position in both the American League and the National League some love. The Rockies are currently tied for their longest streak of not having a player win a Silver Slugger, they missed in 1993 and 1994 for two straight years, and their last winner now was in 2019, when Trevor Story took one home.

Rodgers and Blackmon aren’t the favorites at their spot, so it’s likely the Rockies will go without a silver slugger on offense for three straight years for the first time in club history.

Rodgers, a second baseman, had his finest season yet as a pro. The 25-year-old slashed .266/.325/.408 with 13 home runs and 63 RBI in 137 games. Rodgers’ season was very well-rounded, also nominated for a Gold Glove.

Blackmon has a chance to make history and win the Silver Slugger for the first full season in NL history played with a DH. At the non-fielding position, Blackmon slashed .264./.314/.419 with 16 home runs and 78 RBI.

Rodgers is up against Jeff McNeil from the Mets, Jake Cronenworth from the Padres, Ketel Marte from the D-Backs and Kolten Wong from the Brewers.

Blackmon’s competition is San Diego’s Josh Bell, St. Louis’ Albert Pujols, Washington’s Luke Voigt, Los Angeles’ Justin Turner and Philadelphia’s Bryce Harper.

Here’s the full list of nominees below.
