Despite long losing streak, Hackett says no staff changes and “status quo”

If it’s broken, you should try to fix it.

Apparently, the Denver Broncos won’t be doing that this week.

At his media availability on Monday, before the team heads to London to take on the Jaguars next weekend, head coach Nathaniel Hackett was asked if he’d be making any changes to his staff or play-calling duties. Nope. Not yet, at least.

“Right now, on our short week, we’re going to keep it status quo,” Hackett said. “We’re all going to work together to build a great plan. I feel like our operation has been going really well. We held the ball for a long time, we moved the ball, we just didn’t convert on some third-downs. That kind of stalled us. But we’re going to keep going how we are and I think that we’ll evaluate everything. We always do.”

There’s so much wrong with that answer it’s not even funny. First of all, the Broncos don’t have a short week. They played Sunday and will play next Sunday. Yes, traveling overseas is a task, but the week isn’t short. Second, the operation is going well? Really? In what universe? Denver remains the lowest scoring offense in the NFL after putting up just nine points against the Jets.

Finally, converting on third-down is kind of critical, right? We’re just going to ignore you had to punt the ball six times, threw an interception and had the game end with a turnover on downs?

I understand Hackett is probably exhausted and the last thing he wanted to do was talk to the media before getting on long plane ride. But come on. Words matter, and not making any changes with that explanation is poor. Just like his coaching and his 2-5 football team right now.
