Avalanche get good news on Devon Toews’ injury, but he’ll miss some time

Oct 21, 2022, 11:29 AM

The Colorado Avalanche will already be without captain Gabriel Landeskog for the next three months.

The last thing they needed was another serious injury to a key player. It appears they’ve dodged a bullet.

Defenseman Devon Toews left the Avs game on Wednesday night against the Jets with an injury and didn’t play in the third period. He was spotted headed to the X-ray room after the contest, so there was some fear it could be serious. But good news arrived on Friday morning, as Cale Makar’s defensive linemate should be okay.

That’s great to hear from Jared Bednar, who’s usually coy on injuries, just like all hockey coaches. Considering Toews wasn’t at morning skate before the Avalanche prepare to face the Seattle Kraken tonight, fans were anxious to hear Bednar’s update.

Since the Avs are on a back-to-back, if Toews just misses tonight and then tomorrow in Vegas, that’s all good. Colorado has a couple of days off after that before heading to New York to face the Rangers on Tuesday.

It will be interesting to see how Bednar shuffles the lines without Toews in there, both in five-on-five and on the power-play. Bowen Bryam is certainly a candidate to be Makar’s partner on the blue line the next two games.

All in all, deep breath Avs fans, it appears the team escaped anything serious with Toews.
