Broncos injury update: Josey Jewell sidelined with calf injury

Sep 9, 2022, 1:44 PM | Updated: 2:54 pm

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Josey Jewell did not practice Friday after suffering a calf injury during Thursday’s practice.

Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett described Jewell as “day-to-day.” However, defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero sounded like a man preparing for a contingency plan that involves reserves Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad as the Broncos prepare to face Seattle on Monday night.

“We feel like we’ve got a good group of guys that can more than replace,” Evero said. “Obviously, we’re going to miss Josey, but that’s part of the league. All of the backups have got to be ready to go.”

Evero said that his confidence in Singleton and Strnad is “very, very high.”

Strnad started five games for the Broncos last season. Singleton started 19 games over the past two seasons for the Eagles and led them in tackles during each of those last two seasons.

The same uncertainty doesn’t exist at the other inside-linebacker spot. Jonas Griffith said Thursday that he feels “fantastic,” and he had a full practice workload that day.

Griffith missed the final two preseason games due to a dislocated elbow suffered Aug. 13 against Dallas.

“He looks great,” Evero said. “It doesn’t look like his arm is affected or his elbow is affected. He’s playing fast. He’s using his hand, and he’s being physical.”

Edge rusher Randy Gregory was limited Thursday, but was on the UCHealth Training Center practice field Friday for the full-pad practice.

“He looks great. He looks ready to go,” Evero said.

Wide receiver KJ Hamler (hip/knee) and right tackle Billy Turner (knee) were also limited Thursday, but were on the field for Friday’s work.

ALSO OF NOTE: Safety P.J. Locke changed jersey numbers, going from 37 to 6.
