The Denver Broncos face a big challenge in 2022.
Yes, the team added a major upgrade at quarterback in Russell Wilson, but the AFC West is absolutely loaded. The Chiefs will always be good as long as they have Patrick Mahomes. The Chargers are a trendy pick with Justin Herbert. And the Raiders traded for maybe the top wide receiver in football in Davante Adams.
But at least one Broncos cornerback thinks Denver is the team to beat.
Michael Ojemudia joined Nate Jackson and John Davis on 104.3 The Fan after practice on Saturday and was asked his thoughts on the rest of the division. Ojemudia didn’t hold back.
“I think we’re the best.” Ojemudia said. “Led by Justin (Simmons) and Kareem (Jackson) and Pat (Surtain II) and all those guys. I think top down, we’re just really hungry and we’re going to put the best body of work together.”
When asked if he was scared of any of those other teams, Ojemudia’s answer was short and sweet.
“Not at all,” he said.
Ojemudia only played two games in 2021 after suffering a hamstring injury during the preseason in Seattle. He said he now feels “100 percent” and will look to get back to his 2020 form where he played all 16 games and started 11.
The Broncos top corner is obviously Surtain, with Ronald Darby slated to start opposite of him. K’Waun Williams should handle the slot duties, but there’s definitely a role for Ojemudia on this team. And as for the pressure of playing with Wilson, Ojemudia says his unit doesn’t feel it.
“Not really, to be honest. The defense has been holding it down for the last three years. We’re just going to continue to do that and build. We can be ourselves and the offense is going to be themselves. But it’s definitely going to be a competition every day,” Ojemudia said.
He’s also not worried about where he fits on the depth chart, and knows opportunities will assuredly present themselves this year.
“(I’m) just perfecting my craft. Seeing where I can fit in this team. Finding my role and just doing my part so I can have some momentum going into the season,” Ojemudia said.
The first week of training camp is in the books. Now Ojemudia and the Broncos will get a well-earned day off before getting back on the practice field on Monday. The opener against the Dallas Cowboys in the preseason is just two weeks away.
