The Madden receiver ratings are out, and they’re not kind to the Broncos

Jul 18, 2022, 1:03 PM

The Broncos think highly of their receivers. Highly enough to give Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick new contracts last season.

The folks who make the Madden ratings for the 2023 edition of the video game disagree.

None of the Broncos’ wide receivers are among the top 25 players at the position in overall ranking heading into the season.

The highest, Courtland Sutton, ranks 27th, with an 84 overall ranking that places him in a tie with Miami’s Jaylen Waddle, Arizona’s Marquise Brown and Cincinnati’s Tyler Boyd.

Sutton’s highest rating is his catch rating: 92. That places him in a tie for 16th-best in that attribute.

Jerry Jeudy is next with an 82 overall rating, which places him in a six-way tie for 36th with New England’s Devante Parker, Jacksonville’s Marvin Jones Jr., Carolina’s Robbie Anderson, Sterling Shepard of the New York Giants and Allen Robinson of the Los Angeles Rams.

You have to go even further down to find Tim Patrick. With an 80 overall rating, he sits in a six-way tie for 47th. He shares that spot with Kansas City’s Juju Smith-Schuster, Arizona’s A.J. Green, New England’s Jakobi Meyers and a pair of Buffalo Bills — Gabriel Davis and Jamison Crowder.

No. 4 receiver KJ Hamler checks in with a speed ranking of 94 that places him in a 12-way tie for 15th.

Hamler’s acceleration rating of 96 puts him in a four-way tie for third. But with sub-70 ratings in strength (58), awareness (65), he checks in with a 75 overall rating that places him in an 11-way tie for 85th.

Of course, Sutton and Patrick signed contracts that include just under $32 million in fully guaranteed money combined. But those deals suddenly look quaint after the Great Wide Receiver Spending Spree of 2022.

Sutton’s fully-guaranteed outlay is now 30th among wide receivers; Patrick’s is 46th, according to the data compiled by OvertheCap.com.

The tale is similar in average annual contract value. Sutton ranks 22nd, checking in at $15 million per year on a four-year contract. Patrick is 33rd, at $10 million per year on a three-year deal.

The chance for Sutton, Patrick, Hamler and Jeudy to prove the Madden ratings people wrong begins next week, when training camp commences.
