Sometimes, it’s not hyperbole.

After the Colorado Avalanche obliterated the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final 7-0, NHL legend Mark Messier couldn’t help himself. The six-time Stanley Cup champion put some insanely high praise on Colorado, saying it’s one of the best hockey games he’s ever seen played.

“That was the most dominant, best team game I’ve ever seen in my lifetime,” Messier said on ABC postgame. “From the start of the game to the finish. Discipline, they did everything you could possibly do to make it a perfect performance. Tampa Bay’s got a lot of problems to solve.”

You can watch Messier say it for yourself below:

Messier, who won five of his championships with the Oilers and one with the Rangers, should be trusted on the matter. This isn’t a random person heaping praise on the Avs, it’s Mark Messier!

The Lightning have won two straight Stanley Cups, but look thoroughly outclassed and outmatched in this series. The Avalanche ripped their hearts out with a 4-3 win in OT of Game 1 then stole their pride with the 7-0 beatdown in Game 2.

The series shifts to Tampa Bay on Monday night for Game 3, but can the Bolts recover to make this series competitive? If the Avs play anywhere close to like they did in Game 2, the answer will be no. And Messier will have to find a new way to describe one of the best hockey teams the sport has ever seen.
