One of the most famous Broncos was part of a potential new ownership group whose bid came up short.
According to 9NEWS and 104.3 The Fan insider Mike Klis, former running back Terrell Davis was involved with Josh Harris and his attempt to buy the team. Harris, who owns the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils bid somewhere between $4.25 and $4.5 billion, according to Klis. The Broncos ended up being sold to the Walton-Penner family for $4.65 billion.
“They reached out, we talked,” Davis told Klis. “They said they were interested in bringing me in as part of their ownership group and they wanted to know if the feeling was mutual. And it certainly was. And then it was waiting to see what would happen. I was on standby hoping for the bid, but obviously it never came.”
Klis reports Davis signed a non-disclosure agreement with Harris, signaling he was very much involved. Harris had also recruited NBA legend Magic Johnson to be part of the group.
“Getting that call was definitely exciting and an honor. After playing for the Broncos as a player — this was the only team I played for — and then to have a chance to be part of this ownership group in some capacity would have been a dream come true,” Davis told Klis.
Davis played seven seasons with the Broncos and won two championships, including being named MVP of Super Bowl XXXII. He rushed the ball 30 times for 157 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-24 win over the Green Bay Packers. Davis followed that legendary performance up by rushing for 2,008 yards in the 1998 season — a year in which the Broncos also won it all. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017.
Obviously, it would have been a lot of fun to see Davis as part of new Broncos ownership. He’s certainly one of the most beloved players in franchise history and has followed up his excellent playing career with a successful broadcasting career. Davis told Klis he’d like to return to the Broncos in some capacity.
“One of the most asked questions I get from people — they already assume I’m a part of the Broncos’ organization. I know I can bring some value to the organization, whether it’s as an advisor, an ambassador or it’s part of the DEI [Diversity, Equity, Inclusion] programs, there’s plenty of things I’d love to be a part of,” Davis said.
The Broncos sale to the Walton-Penner family still needs to be approved by NFL owners, but that’s a technicality at this point. There are reports another former Bronco in Peyton Manning could be involved with them, but nothing is official on that front.
For now, a lot of ex-Broncos may want to be part of ownership, but guys like Davis, Manning and John Elway remain on the outside looking in.
