Broncos running back Javonte Williams is on the verge of becoming a superstar.
After a stellar rookie season, most presume Willams will be Denver’s clear cut No. 1 running back in 2022. The team did re-signed Melvin Gordon late Tuesday night, but Williams should still be the featured option of out the backfield.
Conventional wisdom says Williams will run the ball 20-25 times a game this season. He was asked on Tuesday after Broncos voluntary workouts if he’s ready for that. The question came before the Broncos reached a new deal with Gordon.
“I’ve been talking to Mel lately. Just seeing how he was, seeing what he’s been doing. Whatever (GM) George (Paton) got planned, I’m ready to go. If I got to split carries, if I’m a starter, like it doesn’t matter whatever it is. I’m trying to win a Super Bowl,” Williams said.
That’s a great attitude from the former North Carolina star, who could certainly say it’s his show after what he did in 2021. Williams rushed 203 times for more than 900 yards and four touchdowns, while also catching 43 passes and finding the end zone three more times. He was a bulldog on the ground, consistently breaking tackles and making highlight reel plays every Sunday.
And being a rookie in the NFL is tough, but Williams thrived. Still, he says even this spring the game has started to come a little easier.
“Yeah, I’m definitely getting more confident. Everything is starting to slow down, starting to feel like regular football again and not just like the NFL,” Williams said.
While Williams answered questions politically, it’s not exactly a secret he’ll be a featured part of a dangerous offense that includes Russell Wilson, Courtland Sutton, Tim Patrick and Jerry Jeudy. Head coach Nathaniel Hackett, a brilliant offensive mind, should bring it all together.
“A whole lot of positivity, a whole lot of energy. We really like that as a team. I feel like it’s lifting us up. I couldn’t ask for anybody else as a coach,” Williams said of Hackett.
Williams also has lofty goals for himself and his fellow running backs this upcoming season. Again, he spoke before the team reached a new deal with Gordon.
“We’re just trying to be the best room in the league (and) do everything we can to win the Super Bowl,” Williams said.
Williams might be open to splitting carries in 2022, but Broncos Country is ready to see him tote the rock. He should get plenty of opportunities as the Broncos pursue their first playoff season since 2015.
