It is mock draft season. With the first round set to start in just 15 days, the draftniks are coming out in droves, providing their latest projections of what’s going to happen in Las Vegas.
While a lot of the mocks up to this point are fairly laughable, the current ones start to have some credibility. Now that teams have made trades and gone through free agency, projecting their moves in the draft actually starts to make sense. After all, everyone knows their true team needs.
So when Mel Kiper Jr. put out his latest mock draft on ESPN.com, it was worth checking out. His projections have some value.
For Broncos fans, there’s less intrigue than in most years. After the Russell Wilson trade, Denver doesn’t have a pick until No. 64, the final selection in the second round. So the draft will be well into Friday before the Broncos are on the clock.
What are they going to do with that selection? Well, if they go the route that Kiper projects, Broncos Country will love the pick.
The ESPN draft guru has the Broncos taking Trey McBride, the tight end out of Colorado State. Here’s his explanation of the pick:
McBride is more advanced as a pass-catcher than Dulcich, which is what the Broncos need with new quarterback Russell Wilson. With Noah Fant off to Seattle, there are targets available. McBride had 90 catches for 1,121 yards last season; he could stretch the seams in Denver.
Many believe McBride is the best tight end in the draft. Most have him as a first-round talent. So if he falls to the Broncos at No. 64, that would be a steal.
Throw in the local ties – McBride not only went to CSU, but he grew up in Fort Morgan – and the need at the position, and this becomes a home-run pick. Denver would be ecstatic with the tight end falling to them at the end of the second round.
And Broncos Country would be happy too.
