Free agent running back Melvin Gordon doesn’t appear to be happy with his old representation.
According to Pro Football Talk, Gordon got rid of agents Fletcher Smith and Damarius Bilbo and has switched to Brian Murphy and Joe Panos of Athletes First. Mike Florio found out the information by using NFLPA records.
Gordon, who spent the last two seasons with the Broncos, is still unsinged nearly a month into free agency. He made $16M with Denver the last two years, but Florio is reporting his value has gone way down. According to a source, Florio says Gordon is probably looking at a one-year deal worth about $2.5M. No wonder he fired his old agents.
Gordon’s been in the NFL for seven seasons, his first five with the Chargers before coming to Denver. He’s rushed for more than 6,100 yards and 53 touchdowns, but also has a fumbling problem. Gordon’s fumbled 21 times, including seven with the Broncos the last two seasons. There’s been several fumbles at inopportune times that have cost his team games. Regardless, Gordon still has talent, so its surprising his market is so limited.
Javonte Williams will undoubtedly be Denver’s No. 1 running back in 2022, so I don’t think it makes much sense to bring Gordon back. Would he really accept a role where he only gets 8-10 carries a game and is clearly a backup? I doubt it. Gordon’s been “the guy” pretty much his whole career, and will only be 29-years-old this upcoming season.
Gordon told Denver7’s Troy Renck a month ago he wants to come back to the Broncos, and GM George Paton has said they’re open to the idea, but nothing feels imminent. It appears Gordon is getting impatient, blaming his old agents for the delay in finding a new deal.
