The Denver Broncos have a new head coach and a new quarterback.
Now they just need a new owner.
The Broncos have officially been for sale for a few months now, and we’re starting to learn more about who might be interested in acquiring the team. Over the weekend 9NEWS Broncos insider Mike Klis published a list of nine possible candidates to buy the Broncos, and there were some names that stood out.
Here’s Mike’s list of folks who have been “circulated in the media to this point” as interested in owning the Broncos:
– Robson Walton / Greg Penner (Walton family)
– Josh Harris (Private equity / sports franchise mogul)
– Byron Allen Group (Media mogul)
– Alec Gores, Dean Metropoulos, Mat Ishbia Group (Detroit Pistons owner)
– Behdad Eghbali, Jose E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones (Private equity)
– Todd Boehly (Owns DraftKings)
– Robert Smith (Private equity)
– Jeff Bezos (Amazon founder)
– Ye (Entertainer, formerly Kanye West)
The list is obviously enticing, with a wide range of backgrounds for all nine candidates. Some have experience in sports, some don’t. Some are household names, some are not. But I can’t get over the fact that Klis included Ye in a legitimate fashion. Could he really make a play to own the team? Apparently. Here’s what Mike wrote:
The former Kanye West and husband to Kim Kardashian, Ye is still a hot-selling Rapper worth $1.8 billion, according to Forbes. Like Byron Allen, Ye would seemingly need to put together a group of investors if he were to have the financial means to buy the Broncos. But one of his business partners, embattled receiver Antonio Brown, has taken to Twitter to announce Ye’s interest in buying the team.
It will be fascinating to see who ends up buying the Broncos, and with a price tag of more than $4B, the process should be competitive. Also, the fact Klis didn’t include John Elway and Peyton Manning is curious. He did mention they have some interest, but would be, at most, minority investors as part of a group. It’s a good reminder a millionaire has a lot of money, but a billionaire has an obscene amount of money. Neither Elway nor Manning is one of those.
Buckle up, Broncos Country. This is about to get really interesting.
