Report: Rockies remain “interested” in former National League MVP

Mar 14, 2022, 1:56 PM | Updated: 5:15 pm

The Colorado Rockies roster is lacking star power and the team is looking to make one big move that would help address the issue.

The Athletic’s Nick Groke and Ken Rosenthal are reporting the Rockies are pursuing free agent Kris Bryant to fill a major void in their lineup.

Bryant, the 2016 National League MVP with the Chicago Cubs, was traded to the San Francisco Giants last season and is currently a free agent. In 884 career games he’s hitting .278 with 167 home runs and 487 RBI.

Bryant has made four All-Star games in his career, including in 2021. He won the World Series with the Cubs in 2016, the same year he won the MVP.

The Rockies obviously need a big name and a big bat after trading Nolan Arenado before last season and almost assuredly letting Trevor Story walk this offseason. As of Monday afternoon, Story had still not signed a deal with a new team, but the Rockies signed shortstop Jose Iglesias over the weekend, assuring his departure.

Signing Bryant would by no means heal the wounds of the departures of Arenado and Story, but it would at least be a start to making the 2022 Rockies more respectable on the field.

In addition to Groke and Rosenthal’s report, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman says the Bryant talks are now at the “ownership level.”

Stay tuned.
