The Broncos add a much-needed dose of experience to coaching staff

Feb 11, 2022, 10:02 AM

There’s a lot to like about Nathaniel Hackett’s coaching staff. It’s a young, creative, energetic group. On the heels of Vic Fangio, Ed Donatell, Pat Shurmur and Tom McMahon, that’s a breath of fresh air.

There has been one concern when looking at the group on paper, however. There isn’t a lot of experience in their current jobs. From the head coach to his three coordinators, it’s the highest job almost everyone on the staff has ever held. That could be trouble, as it suggests a learning curve is in store.

On Friday, the Broncos made a move to help alleviate those concerns. They added a much-needed dose of experience to the staff.

To say Capers has “experience” would be a grand understatement. He’s been in the NFL since 1986, as a defensive assistant and head coach.

He first rose to notoriety in the early 1990s as the Steelers defensive coordinator. That landed him his first head coach gig, taking over the expansion Panthers in 1995. In just his second season in Carolina, his team advanced all the way to the NFC Championship Game.

After a stint in Jacksonville as a DC, Capers was once again tasked with taking over a new franchise. This time around, it was the expansion Texans in 2002. From there, he’s had two other defensive coordinator jobs, in Miami and Green Bay, as well as various other senior assistant positions.

That’s a wealth of experience for Hackett, Evero and everyone else on the Broncos staff to tap into. It’s a smart, savvy addition by the organization.
