Clayton: Paton has made the Broncos an attractive option for a QB

Nov 22, 2021, 2:52 PM

The beauty of watching the play of Broncos receivers Tim Patrick and Courtland Sutton is they catch the ball every time the ball is thrown to them. They don’t drop the ball.

Patrick and Sutton didn’t drop the ball when it came to contract negotiations, either. Over the long weekend and bye week, Patrick and Sutton signed contract extension. Patrick got more than $10 million a year. Sutton agreed to a four-year, $60.8 million contract extensions.

The other person who didn’t drop the ball was general manager George Paton. He kept together one of the best receiving units in football. Patrick, Sutton, Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler are under contract for multiple years. By doing this, Paton has made Denver a destination sight for quarterbacks next year, whether it would be in free agency or trades.

Who wouldn’t mind going to a team with this much talent at receiver and tight end? Pro Football Focus rated the Broncos the sixth best pass-catching group in football before the season. Sutton has been to a Pro Bowl. Jeudy is one of the best young receivers in the league. The team might not re-sign running back Melvin Gordon, but they have Javonte Williams, one of the best rookie runners this year and a beat to stop in the running game.

I wondered if Paton would be able to keep Sutton after they made the Patrick deal. He wasted no time answering the question.

Before getting these deals done, the Broncos has 21 players who would be unrestricted free agents next year. About eight of those players were starters. Now you see Paton is emphasizing the offense and that should make for a very interesting offseason as far a talent acquisitions.
