Clayton: Fangio likes the versatility offered by his talented defense

Vic Fangio talked about his defense on Thursday.

One of his most interesting answers was about how he likes to go with three down linemen and five defensive backs. With the additions George Paton gave Fangio during the offseason, the Broncos head coach can do even more of what he likes.

His roster is deep on the defensive line. And it’s really deep in the secondary.

“It’s different front mechanics,” Fangio said. “The coverage system, as far as the five defensive backs, is the same as when it’s a 4-2 look.”

The Broncos are normally in a 3-4 as their base defense.

“It’s just a little different front mechanically,” the head coach added. “They have an extra guy in there and you’re taking out one inside linebacker and putting in a big play guy. It’s just different for the offense.”

Fangio also talked about how first-round pick Patrick Surtain keeps getting better every week. He’s learning three positions, increasing his chances of contributing in year one.

Surtain is very good at covering wide receivers, but his size and speed allow him to play well against tight ends. Von Miller, for example, thinks Surtain can lineup against tight ends Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs and Darren Waller of the Las Vegas Raiders

Fangio also seems optimistic about Bradley Chubb being able to play at the start of the season. The outside linebacker has been in and out of the lineup and practice throughout the preseason and training camp.
