Clayton: Fangio has to juggle more than just the QB decision in preseason

Broncos coach Vic Fangio said starters will play in Saturday’s preseason game in Seattle.

He didn’t indicate how long starters will be out there. It might not be long. But they will be on the field.

Teddy Bridgewater will get the start, but the quarterback battle continues to get more interesting. One report has Drew Lock close to getting the starting job. Based on what happened last week against the Minnesota Vikings, that shouldn’t be surprising.

Lock completed five passes for 151 yards. You can see the noticeable difference in the two quarterbacks. Lock has the stronger arm and the better ability to throw deep and make big chunk plays. Bridgewater is more efficient and makes fewer mistakes. With the pass-catching ability of this team, the stronger arm might have the edge.

Fangio said he might make a decision by next week and that would be fitting. The Broncos have to decide who will start the third preseason game. Of course, it could be that Fangio won’t play the starters at all in the exhibition finale. It’s too early to determine that.

The two quarterbacks split plays in Thursday’s practice and Fangio continues to suggest the battle is even-steven.

Before Saturday, Fangio has other decisions to make. He has to see if he’s going to play Von Miller and Bradley Chubb. He’s trying to decide if Melvin Gordon will play, but you know Javonte Williams will play.

One interesting move is that Bobbie Massie and Calvin Anderson are battling for the right tackle job. Anderson will get the start on Saturday.
